How we train

Relaxed first. Ridden when ready. Written up the same day.

Classical, in order. Relaxation and straightness before anything is asked. It is the method Vienna has used for three centuries because the horses stay sound into their twenties. Why we ride this way →

Groundwork before saddle. A green or difficult horse is worked on the ground until it is ready to be ridden, and not a day before. The evaluation says honestly how long that is likely to take.

Every session logged. What was done, how the horse went. You read it on your phone the day it happens, and a short video comes every week. A missed session shows as missed.

Full-care board, and a program for every horse.

One kind of stall, one standard of care, one price for board. Every horse on the row is in a program with a Hussar trainer, at least once a week. Below the board is how much more you want done, and what it all adds up to.

Included: a trainer looks at your horse six days a week; we feed the grain and supplements you supply; we hold for the farrier and the vet; lit arenas, round pens, wash racks and the Park's trails.

Not included: farrier, grain, supplements, fly spray, and the horse-owner liability insurance the Park requires.

The one rule

Every horse here is in a program.

The minimum is one private lesson or trainer session a week, $399 a month. It's how we can stand behind every horse on the row: someone who knows your horse has hands on it every week, and you always have a coach. Want more done? Step up any month.

Questions people ask first

What happens at the evaluation session?

With the horse: ground work first, leading, standing, yielding, loading if that's the issue; ridden if it's safe and sensible. Then a written plan with what the next months can and can't do, and the price. Without the horse: you see the barn, meet the trainer and talk it through. Free either way; the Park charges $25 at the gate for a haul-in.

Do you take green, young or difficult horses?

Yes, and they're most of the training horses here. Groundwork first, ridden when the horse is ready and never before. Hard loader? Text a short video instead and we plan the haul-in around loading.

Will my horse actually get worked, and how do I know?

Five days a week in Full Training, three in Half, every session logged the day it happens. You read the log. A missed session shows as missed. If it isn't going to plan, you hear it at week two, in writing, with what we recommend instead.

Who works with my horse?

Adam runs the program: he writes the plan for every horse, and every session follows it in the same classical system. The log says what was done. Watch any session, any day: the Park is public.

Do I have to commit long term?

Full and Half Training start with three months, then run month to month with 30 days' notice. Boarding with the weekly lesson is month to month from the start. A one-page agreement covers sessions, price, what's paid to the Park and the notice period; the Park requires horse-owner liability insurance.

Can I ride my horse during the program?

Yes. Any of your horse's sessions can be your private lesson on it, and on the other days the arenas are yours whenever you like. Group sessions, the monthly trail ride and shows at the Park are open to every training horse.

Where is Hansen Dam Horse Park, and how far do people haul?

11127 Orcas Ave, Lake View Terrace, ten minutes off the 210. Owners come from all over Los Angeles, Ventura County, Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley. No trailer? Ask; hauling can usually be arranged. Any breed, any age; the only hard line is soundness.
